Abu Bakr al-Siddiq

Born into Banu Taym of Quraysh, he became a respected cloth merchant known for honesty and knowledge of Arab lineage. Even before Islam he neither drank wine nor bowed to idols, and was beloved for his mildness and generosity.

When the Prophet ﷺ shared the Message, Abu Bakr believed without hesitation — earning him the title al-Siddiq, the Truthful. He then called others to Islam, and through him believed Uthman, al-Zubayr, Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf, Sa'd and Talha.

As Quraysh tortured the weak and enslaved, Abu Bakr spent his wealth to buy and free them — most famously Bilal ibn Rabah, who was being crushed under a rock for his faith. His generosity became a shield for the vulnerable.

He was the Prophet's sole companion on the Hijrah, hiding with him in the Cave of Thawr as pursuers stood at its mouth. The Qur'an records the moment: 'Do not grieve; indeed God is with us.' No companion is honoured in this way in the Book.

In Madinah he was present at Badr, Uhud, the Trench, Hudaybiyyah, the Conquest and Tabuk. He led the first Hajj in 9 AH, and in the Prophet's final illness was chosen to lead the congregational prayers — a sign the community did not miss.

After the Prophet's passing he steadied a grieving community, reminding them: 'Whoever worshipped Muhammad — Muhammad has died; whoever worships God — God is ever-living.' As Caliph he confronted the Ridda, and began the effort to gather the Qur'an into a single record.

He led for a little over two years, dying in 634 CE and buried beside the Prophet ﷺ. He left almost nothing of wealth, having given it in God's cause. His steadfastness preserved the community at its most fragile hour.
