The Battle of Badr

The day of distinction

Some three hundred believers met a far larger Makkan force at the wells of Badr. Against the odds they prevailed — a turning point the Qur'an calls the Day of Distinction, when truth and falsehood were made clear.

01

Causes of Badr

Tension with Quraysh and a threatened caravan led to an unplanned confrontation at the wells of Badr.

02

The Two Forces

About three hundred believers faced a Makkan army roughly three times their number.

03

Outcome and the Qur'an

The believers prevailed, and the Qur'an named the day the Day of Distinction between truth and falsehood.

Qur'an

وَلَقَدْ نَصَرَكُمُ اللَّهُ بِبَدْرٍ وَأَنتُمْ أَذِلَّةٌ

“God had already given you victory at Badr when you were few.”

Qur'an · Al 'Imran 3:123
