Enslaved and tortured for his faith, Bilal was freed by Abu Bakr and became the first to call the adhan. He gave the call to prayer from atop the Kaaba on the day Makkah was opened.

On the day of the Conquest, he climbed atop the Kaaba and gave the adhan — a former slave calling the whole city to the worship of one God.
